Back in 2014, when the Gary Sinise Foundation was still based in Southern California, we hosted an event called Hollywood Salutes Heroes where we brought wounded service members from Walter Reed and other military hospitals to California for a chance to break up the arduous recovery process and have some fun. I called up my pals from film and television and with their support, along with countless volunteers, we showed those heroes that their service and sacrifice would never be forgotten or taken for granted. Now that we have settled in Tennessee, I wanted to recreate the magic and camaraderie of that long ago weekend.

So, Nashville Salutes Heroes was born.

We reached out to veterans and first responders whom we have served over the years – whether it be with a mortgage-free home, an adapted vehicle, or mental wellness support – and invited them to come to Music City. And then we asked them for something hard: blind faith. Every activity would be a surprise.

For those who have served our country and communities, whose lives depended on knowing what they were walking into, this was a tall ask. I am truly humbled these brave men and women gave us their trust, and proud to say we honored it. Each moment, from the time they landed at the airport to the last goodbye, was curated to be an unforgettable experience full of fun, connection, and camaraderie. I reached out to pals here in Nashville, amazing entertainers, and even called up some of my CSI: NY buddies to join us.

With a hero’s welcome waiting for them at every stop along the way, the entire weekend was an opportunity for all of us at the Foundation to express your heartfelt thanks for their service and commitment.

Your love and appreciation were felt every step along the way. You helped us to bring joy, healing, and community to the heroes we serve, and facilitated bonds that will last a lifetime.
