Travis "T.J." Brown

T.J. after Injury
A Life Built Around Showing Up for Others
Travis Brown, known to everyone who loves him as TJ, has spent his whole life showing up. He grew up with a heart for his community, his faith, and his family. He played collegiate football and ran track, but it was his drive to serve that would come to define him. When TJ became a police officer with the Ferguson Police Department in Missouri, it wasn't just a job, it was a calling he answered fully and without reservation.
Over the course of his career, TJ served in a range of specialized roles. He joined the Police Athletic League, working alongside the youth of St. Louis by training with them, competing with them, and showing them what it looks like to be a man of integrity in a uniform. He served as a SWAT officer, one of the most demanding assignments any officer can hold, and provided security for dignitaries and marquee events across the region, including the St. Louis Blues and Cardinals championship celebrations. He was the kind of officer who made people feel safer simply by being there.
Outside the badge, TJ was equally present. He was active in his church, a devoted outdoorsman, a man who loved grilling for people, playing board games and cornhole, and spending every possible moment with his daughters, Amelia, now 9, and Emery, now 7.
The Night Everything Changed
On the evening of August 9, 2024, TJ was on duty at Ferguson Police Department headquarters, where a large crowd had gathered to mark the tenth anniversary of the violent protests that swept through their community in 2014. The atmosphere was tense, but TJ was where he always was: present, professional, and committed to keeping people safe.
As the situation escalated late that evening, a protester fleeing from officers collided violently with TJ, sending him crashing to the pavement. His head struck the ground with devastating force. TJ suffered a severe traumatic brain injury and did not regain consciousness for two months. He was transported by air to an Atlanta rehabilitation facility, and later to QLI Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska, one of the nation's premier centers for brain injury rehabilitation, before finally being able to return home to St. Louis in March 2026.
The injury that night altered the course of TJ's life profoundly. Today, he has limited mobility on his left side and continues to relearn the basic mechanics of movement. He communicates primarily through an iPad and relies on a feeding tube and colostomy bag. He has endured countless surgeries, and his medical road ahead remains uncertain. Yet through every procedure, every setback, and every long day in a rehabilitation facility, one thing has never wavered: TJ's spirit.
The Long Road Back — Taken One Step at a Time
TJ is currently in rehabilitation at St. Luke's Hospital Rehabilitation Center in Chesterfield, Missouri, where his care team works with him daily. He is beginning to stand and take steps, with assistance, a milestone that would have seemed impossible in the first months after his injury. He has been introduced to adaptive sports where he’s tried shooting and archery with enthusiasm and success.
The athlete who once sprinted down a football field is relearning what his body can do. The competitor who once guarded his community is now in the fight of his life.
Barbara, Amelia, and Emery: The Family That Refuses to Let Go
Beside TJ every single day is his mother, Barbara Brown, who serves as his caregiver, advocate, and anchor. Since the night of the injury, Barbara has restructured her entire life around her son. She navigates his medical system, coordinates his care, and makes sure that when TJ opens his eyes each morning, a face he loves is there.
Amelia and Emery visit their dad as often as they can, and those visits are a lifeline for everyone. TJ's face lights up with his daughters as they laugh and play games.
With your support, the Gary Sinise Foundation will provide TJ and his family with a mortgage-free, specially adapted smart home in the St. Charles, Missouri area. We are designing a home engineered for his extraordinary needs, where his mother and daughters can join him in a healing home environment where he can continue his recovery with dignity. We are honored to show TJ that the community he spent his career protecting will never let his sacrifice be forgotten and that we will never allow him to fight this fight alone.
