Val C.
was in Youngstown, OH on 9/11/01.
I was working as the Activity Director at a nursing home at the time. I walked into the facility that morning to find two of the elderly gentleman who lived there, both veterans of the Vietnam War, in the community room watching the big screen TV. They called me over and said, “Our country is under attack!” For a moment I thought, “A movie must have confused them.” One of the gentleman, who had lost both legs during his service, grabbed my arm and said, “It’s real, and I need to help!” I watched with them as the room quickly filled with staff and residents. I heard that same sentiment from many of the Veterans in our care. Their spirit of service to this country had been awakened and they would have volunteered that day had they been able.
