R. Dorien d.

was in Suffolk, Va Teaching Special Ed., Emotionally Disturbed Students. on 9/11/01.

I knew within minutes of the second plane attack that the whole world had changed, that nothing would ever be the same again. I was very surprised at the attitudes of some people who did not understand the seriousness and the likely change for the future. My sense of grief for the physical victims was nearly unbearable. Time has healed some of that pain though it raises up from timt-to-time.

Firefighter and other friends headed north out of Virginia to "The Pile" to assist while I stayed here in Virginia trying to present lessons to my students. My wife had an appointment in D.C. to attend classes related to her teaching position. There the skies were beautiful and empty of planes, silece was sickening as a reminder. We watched heavy response take place to the box truck that made a U-turn near the Smithsonian as we passed by. Heavy firearms were displayed. As it turned out this U-turn was only that, no threat, just lost in D.C.

I could elaborate but I suspect that in this case brevity is best. Thank you for the opportunity. May God Bless tou and yours always. In Christ, R. Dorien de Lusignan

Gary & Family at a vigil on Sept 14, 2001

A generation of Americans has no memory of 9/11. Stories like R. Dorien's help them remember.

At the Gary Sinise Foundation, we're preserving the stories of those who experienced it so they can be shared with generations to come. We must never forget the pain we endured, the heroism we witnessed, or the togetherness we felt.
